The hardest part about living a healthy, organic lifestyle isn’t eating healthy. It also isn’t about embracing a farm to table mentality or shopping at locally owned and operated businesses. It isn’t even about cutting soda out!

The hardest part about living naturally is the many small changes we have to make on a daily basis. One of these, a rather large one in fact, involves avoiding toxic beauty and self-care products.

You wouldn’t guess it from looking at them, but beauty products of all shapes and sizes contain A LOT of harmful chemicals. Some of these are worse than others and the five we’ve listed today are the worst offenders.

Make sure to avoid these five toxic ingredients listed below and instead shop natural beauty and personal care products!

Polyethylene/PEGs

You really, really, really want to stay away from polyethylene glycols (PEGs for short). These are the small beads in many face and body scrubs that help exfoliate the skin. They’re often made with 1,4 dioxane, which is thought to be a carcinogen. As if that wasn’t enough, the beads are also sometimes made with ethylene oxide, which is a known carcinogen.

It gets worse, though. These beads don’t degrade normally and can pollute the environment for decades after they’re flushed down the drain. All the while they’re leaking 1,4 dioxane and ethylene oxide into the ground.

Parabens

Parabens are another toxic makeup chemical you should avoid at all costs. Parabens work to preserve skin by mimicking the naturally occurring chemical estrogen. Common parabens include: methylparaben, butylparaben, and propylparaben.

So what’s the big deal? Well, they’ve been shown by the European Commission on Endocrine Disruption to interfere with hormone functions. They’re incredibly absorbable by the body and have been linked to a number of cancers by the FDA, including breast and skin cancer.

Petroleum Distillates

Petroleum distillates are exactly what they sound like: a watered-down version type of petroleum. That’s right, the same stuff that’s used to make fuels. You don’t want to be using this stuff, which is a problem because they’re commonly found in mascaras.

Petroleum distillates are produced alongside fuel and, thanks to this caustic process, often contain contaminants like butadiene. Even if they’re not contaminated with bad stuff, they’ve been linked to an increased risk of cancer. They’re also linked to organic system toxicity, which isn’t something you want to experience.

Fragrance and Parfum

Although these sound harmless enough, they’re really anything but. Fragrance and parfum are actually two terms for something called an “FDA trade secret.” This means that companies don’t have to disclose what they really are.

Research has shown that there are between fourteen and seventeen unlisted and harmful chemicals included in common beauty products. These chemicals vary, but can include petroleum distillates, formaldehyde, and acetone. This is what fragrance and parfum really is. Stay away.

Phthalates

Phthalates are synthetic chemicals that are used in everything from creams and moisturizers to vinyl flooring. They’re serious toxic and have been linked to infertility and undescended testes in males. It’s also thought that they can contribute to premature delivery in women.

Phthalates are similar to human hormones. Don’t let that fool you though, these chemicals are no good at all. They’re often used as part of the “fragrance and parfum” in popular selfcare products. This is due to their ability to hold scents for extended periods of time.

Now that you know what to avoid, it’s time to stock up on healthy beauty products. The Natural has it all, from bath and shower soaps and gels to organic facial care products. Shop today!
