Show Your Heart Some Love with These Supplements

Heart disease caused close to 25% of all deaths in the US in 2008. It’s the leading cause of death for both men and women. In economic terms, heart disease cost the US an estimated $108 billion in 2010 alone.

These statistics all tell different versions of the same story: we need to take better care of our hearts. This idea is near and dear to us here at the Natural. We were founded on the idea of promoting health and wellness. We want to make sure every person is living their best life.

With that in mind, check out our list of the four top supplements for heart health. Learn them, memorize them, and make sure to take them daily to show your heart some of the love it deserves!

Omega-3s

Omega-3 fatty acids are what is known as polyunsaturated fats. These are some of the best supplements you can give your heart.

Commonly found in both fish and flaxseed, omega-3s offer a number of cardiovascular benefits, including: lowering triglyceride levels, decreasing inflammation, lowering depression, helping infants develop neurologically, protecting the brain from Alzheimer’s disease, and more.

The three main types of Omega-3 fatty acids are ALA, EPA, and DHA. Each offers different benefits and, in conjunction with our naturally omega-6 rich diet, can lead to a whole host of good stuff for your heart.

Vitamin D

You probably don’t think of good, old vitamin D when you think of heart health. You should. Not only is vitamin D essential for healthy bones, but it’s been shown to promote heart health. More importantly, vitamin D deficiency has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease.

So what does this vitamin do that is so helpful? Well, it helps our left ventricle pump blood and remain strong. Why just the left? Science isn’t really sure. The important thing is that it helps keep our blood pressure low and our heart tissue healthy.

Magnesium

Magnesium goes hand-in-hand with vitamin D. It helps offset vitamin D deficiency, so if you’re not taking vitamin D, you should make sure to be taking magnesium.

Even better, take both magnesium and vitamin D together. This will help dilate your arteries, which will lower your blood pressure, and help your heart pump more blood, more effectively. Magnesium also lowers blood sugar.

As if all this wasn’t enough, magnesium helps relax just about every organ in your body, metabolically speaking. This leads to stress being taken off your heart and your body running more efficiently overall.

Coenzyme Q 10

You may not have heart of coenzyme Q 10. Not many people have. If you’re looking for a literal power source for your heart, though, you’ve come to the right place.

Coenzyme Q 10 helps your mitochondria produce energy for your heart. You’ll remember from high school biology that mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell. Coenzyme Q 10 helps them produce ATP, which is then used by your heart for energy.

Coenzyme Q 10 is also an antioxidant that helps keep your body free radical free. Although that isn’t directly related to heart health, it’s a nice boost to an already vital supplement.
