From Supplements to Oil Treatments: Naturally Thick Hair

The causes of thinning hair range from heredity and age to hormone and nutrient deficiencies. Common in both men and women, hair loss is also attributed to stress, physical or emotional trauma, and the use of some medications. While a small amount of daily hair loss is normal, seek medical attention if the onset is sudden and the duration is frequent. The following tips and tricks may help restore the natural strength and thickness of your hair while encouraging healthy regrowth.

Natural Hair Oil Treatments

Natural humectants like argan and castor oils have been used for centuries to strengthen and add shine to dull, lifeless hair. Often used to thicken eyebrows and eyelashes castor oil is high in ricinoleic acid, which is a powerful analgesic rich in omega-9 fatty acids. Argan oil, also known as the “Gold of Morocco,” is highly moisturizing and is frequently used to heal damaged scalp and skin. We recommend massaging a small amount of hexane-free castor oil or argan oil into your hair, allowing it to soak into the hair follicle and scalp for at least an hour. Cleanse with a biotin-rich shampoo and style as usual.

Vitamins & Supplements

Nourishing your body from the inside out is the best way to ensure healthy hair, skin and nails. Iron has been shown to promote hair growth and biotin and zinc support healthy hair. A number of formulations created specifically to improve hair luster and growth include vitamins A and C and omega-3 fatty acids to fight free radicals and improve texture, shine and strength. We recommend a diet rich in vitamins and minerals from whole food sources, however; supplementation is crucial for those with nutrient deficiencies.

Styling Products

From gels to sprays, there are a number of styling products on the market that work alone or with heat to make hair appear fuller. While the results of these products are temporary, they can be quite an effective tool, and leave hair looking shiny and strong. We recommend using alcohol-free products since gels and sprays that contain alcohol can lead to breakage and split end damage.

External Factors

Keep in mind that external factors like poor diet, over-processing and chemical exposure can lead to thinning hair. Limit the use of hair elastics and heat-based styling tools, as both have been shown to damage hair, which can lead to thinning. We also recommend utilizing hair care products rich in natural botanicals and essential oils to enhance texture, and avoiding over brushing and styling.
